We’re back from Vegas. Actually we got back last Thursday night, but two things have kept me from posting. #1 I have been recuperating and #2 We came home to find that our wireless router had died, therefore no internet on my laptop. I hijacked Dave’s computer since he has broadband service, but I ran out of time before I could complete anything.
So here’s the skinny on Vegas. This was our first time there and it was pretty much like we expected. In short, it was crazy. We had fun, but it was not relaxing. Also, two events occurred that put a little damper on the trip.
#1 I sprained my foot. I use the word sprain not as any sort of technical medical diagnosis, but instead because I don’t know what else to call it. All I know is that I did something to my heel the first full day we were there which prevented me from walking on it for the rest of the trip. That kind of sucked, but I hobbled around anyway. And we took a few more cab rides than we normally would. A little heartbreaking as I adore walking, but I’m over it (kind of) (okay, truthfully, I am trying not to be bitter about it)
#2 On our last night there, Wednesday night, I came down with either a wicked case of food poisoning or the stomach flu and was violently (and I mean violently) sick all night long. Ya’ll this is the sickest I ever remember being in my life and compounded by the fact that I was in a hotel, it left me begging for mercy. We considered staying an extra day because we weren’t sure if I would be able to leave the hotel or to board a plane. But I desperately wanted to go home and I think it was by sheer will that I stopped puking about an hour before we had to leave for the airport. It was not pretty and God bless my sainted husband who carried all our bags and supported me through the pain of airport check in and security. Sidenote: because of the 6 hours of puking and my completely empty stomach, I was afraid to take any Motrin which is what I had been using to numb the pain in my foot all week. So that left my foot throbbing and me only able to hobble my pathetic self through the airports in both Las Vegas and Detroit. That was the longest flight of my life.
Not to say that we did not have some fun. We went to some nifty clubs (which made me feel old and why didn’t anyone tell me that I was supposed to buy a dress that only fell 1 inch below the bottom of my butt cheeks. I was very overdressed. And by overdressed, I mean that my dress feel well below by ass but well above my knees), we ate some good food (with the exception of possibly Wednesday night’s dinner – the jury is still out on if it was food poisoning or the flu), and we kept some good company (our friends over the weekend and my parents during the week). We also saw the Hoover Dam, the aquarium at Mandalay Bay and “O” the most amazing Cirque de Soleil show at the Bellagio. Things we did not see that one or both of us wanted to see but we just ran out of time, The Erotica Museum (Dave), The Titanic Exhibition at the Luxor (me), Peepshow with Holly from Girls Next Door (Me), A titty bar (Dave), The Venetian (me).
So Vegas left me kind of exhausted. I would post some pictures for you, but in my usual fashion, I kept forgetting to take the camera with me on our excursions, except for the Hoover Dam. Dave had the camera for most of that, so I am guessing that when I do get the pictures off of the camera, there will be about 100 pictures of the dam with no people in it. We’ll see, maybe he’ll surprise me.

A Glorious Tribute to all Countries, but mostly America
We’re back from vacation (of course) and Christmas is over (double of course), and I am back to work this week (balls).
Can I complain about my health insurance for a minute?
I pay about $200 each pay period for health insurance, that is $400 a month to cover myself, Dave and the two kids. Then, every time we go to the doctor, it costs a $15-20 co-pay for the office visit and if there is any medical procedure that needs to be performed, that isn’t covered until we satisfy the annual deductible (which is $1500 per person or $4500 for the family if we go to doctors that are in their network. If we go to doctors that are out of the network then the deductible goes up to $2500 and $7500). Beyond that, prescription coverage is really hard to figure out because they have this really complicated chart that divides drugs into “tiers” and then assigns the percentage of coverage based on the tier the drug falls into and also takes into account if there is a generic version available. If there is a generic, you have to get that or they won’t cover it at all.
I think our plan is considered to be one of the better plans. I work for a large global corporation and I think the payroll deduction is also on the lower end of things.
Thankfully, we are a pretty healthy family. But just to give you a taste, Dave had a little cyst that had to be removed and biopsied this year. He was at the doctor’s office a total of approximately 30 minutes. The actual procedure took about 10 minutes from the time they numbed it to the time they stitched it. That cost me over $300 because I had to pay the doctor for the procedure, the office visit co-pay and then I had to pay for the lab to perform the biopsy.
As I said, we are, thankfully, a pretty healthy family, so the doctor’s visits are pretty minimal. We really don’t go to the doctor much (like probably 1-2 visits each per year and those are mostly well visits). However, I’m sure I have mentioned before that I am a lifetime insomniac. I have tried everything from meditation to medication for this and it has always been a struggle. And with the stress work has been giving me, it has gotten so much worse. I have a hard time falling asleep (if I fall asleep an hour after I get in bed, that is pretty good) and when I do fall asleep I wake up about every hour to hour and a half. I have tried a couple of different medications and they work for a while and then stop. Until I started taking Ambien CR. That has worked consistently for a couple years now. I only take it during the week, and I don’t abuse it. I have never taken more than one pill in a 24 hour period. I fall asleep when I get in bed and usually stay asleep until at least 3am, sometimes even later. It is the best I have slept in years and it costs me about $40-50 a month for the prescription. That is a 30 day supply and I can stretch it to last me at least 6 weeks or more.
So can I live without Ambien? Yes. But it sure has taken one stress out of my life.
My company held their open enrollment in October (where you choose your health plan for the next year). This is also the time when you can decide if you want to contribute to the health care spending account (money held from your paycheck pre-taxed that you can use for health care related expenses). I opted not to use the spending account this year because, as I said, we don’t go to the dr much and it is a pain to track.
So last week I got a letter from the insurance company that they are no longer covering Ambien CR. There is no generic version so if I want to continue taking it, I have to pay cash. I looked around and I don’t think I can get a 30 day supply for less than $160ish. Kiss my ass.
So I pay every paycheck for my health insurance that I pretty much never have a claim against and then the one thing I do use it for and they decide they just aren’t going to cover it anymore. It really pisses me off. If I had known they were going to do that, I would have looked in the changing to a high deductible plan because we really just need to be covered if something catastrophic happens, I’m paying out of my pocket for everything else anyway. Or, I would have at least put some money in the spending account for it, but it is too late now.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that I have insurance and will be covered if one of us gets really sick, but gees, what if one of us does get really sick and then the insurance company decides that they don’t want to cover the prescribed treatment? I guess that is their choice and they can do whatever they want.
Other things they don’t cover: Fertility treatments of any sort and counseling. So basically anything I might want to utilize.
But hey, if I gain 150 lbs, become a diabetic and start abusing alcohol and drugs, well, all those treatments are covered. So I guess I just have the wrong ailments.

Pictures as Promised
So Dave and I had planned on taking a vacation to one of the Caribbean Islands as a sequel to our St. Lucia honeymoon. But our passports took a lot longer to show up and I wasn't having a whole lot of luck finding what I felt was a sufficient deal. While I really really really (and I can't stress this enough) really, wanted to go on vacation, I told Dave it wasn't going to happen. He said he didn't care if he had to sell one of his kidney's that I was to plan something. So I starting looking for places inside the US and lo and behold, I found a phenomenal deal at The Royal Palms Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Arizona wasn't my first choice since it is no where near the ocean, but the deal was too good to pass up. And I knew it was pretty much a sure thing that it would be warm.
So we booked it and we went. And we got there and I shut down. Literally. Usually we are pretty big into sightseeing. We love museums and parks and battlefields, etc.... So I guess I was more worn out than I realized because we got there and I parked my butt at the pool are barely left the resort. Dave hiked Camelback with my brother (who lives in Phoenix) and I went to the spa for a mani and pedi. He did manage to drag me out one day to the Air Force museum and the whole time I just wanted to get back to the resort. Anyway, I read two books and it was heavenly. We really enjoyed just spending some down time with each other.
I've attached some pictures so you can see how pretty the resort was.
This was our little private patio right outside our room. It was in the high 90's/low 100's every day. The last day we were there we ordered room service for breakfast and ate at that table.

This is one of the courtyards at the resort. They had several weddings there the first weekend we were there. That mountain you see is Camelback which is where Dave hiked. He went to the top and was pretty proud of himself.

This is another courtyard where at night you can sit and have drinks. Did anyone else know that you can get Absinthe in the US now? I had my first taste of it here and it was gross. I did not see the green fairy.
I don't have any cute pictures of us together because we really didn't do anything. This is our traditional self portrait. I thought it was cute even though half of my face is cut off.

I'm not dead. Here's the short version.
We have been laying people off at work. It has been sucky.
Dave and I have been experiencing some trials and tribulations of late (see secret blog that does not exist yet). We're okay but it's been sucky too.
Saturday we are leaving for a week in Arizona. Much needed for our mental sanity, our relationship, and our pasty white skin.
On a spiritual note, not to be too cheesy but even with all of the above going on, I have felt the most at peace with my life that I have felt in years.
I want to expound on these things, but there is neither the time nor the will right now.
On a lighter note, I finally got my passport and the picture is worse then my drivers license. I look like Fred Flintstone, my head and face take up most of the picture. I'm pretty sure you cannot get a passport picture retaken just because you think you look stupid.
Hmmmm.

Okay, we're back. But I'm not feeling totally back. We got home late last Wednesday night and right back to work Thursday morning. Friday was Halloween. We also kept the kids for the weekend so I'm still trying to climb out from beneath the pile of laundry. BUT, we had a wonderful time on our trip. I felt the most relaxed that I have probably since our honeymoon. It was a much needed time for us. As soon as I get the pictures off the camera I will post some.
Now when is my next vacation?! :)

Return to the Land of the Living?
I'm back - I think. No plans this weekend, which is in and of itself, actually, a plan. I want to sleep in, and clean my house, and plant some flowers, and did I mention I want to sleep in?
The past month has been insane - beginning with the trip to Indy. Then Dave and I took off for a four day weekend over Mother's Day. As I mentioned, we took our bikes to Mackinac Island. He made me ride until I thought I was going to die. The very first hill we encountered was the hill leading up to the Grand Hotel which I thought was the biggest hill I had ever been up on my bike (little did I know). Dave sailed right up it no problem and I had to get off and walk my bike. It was humiliating. I mean I know he is in better shape than me, but this was unexpected.
Then we realized.
I'm a doofus and know nothing about the gears on my bike. It turns out I was in the most difficult gear. After a crash course on up-shifting and down-shifting, I was back in business and able to stay on my bike for most of the hills. That is when the real fun started.
Dave had procured a map of the island which revealed to us treasures we had never been aware of before. Skull Cave was the first one. So we trekked up what felt like 17 miles of hills to find it.
Folks, it's a bunch of rocks on the side of a hill. No skulls, no bones, no pirates, blood, gore or anything of the sort. It's sort of close to a cemetery, but that's it.
So we moved on to the next gem, the Battlefield of 1814. My hubby is a military history enthusiast so of course when he found out there was a battlefield on the island, we had to ride our bikes up 17 more miles of hills to find it. If you recall, we visited Gettysburg last fall, which is a vast battlefield. The Battlefield of 1814 is the size of my living room and is situated right across the street from the 9th fairway of a golf course. It's lame. I'm sorry, but it's true. And it took a lot of hill to get to it.
So onward to the Crack in the Island. Before we set out on this trek, we actually sat down on a bench to discuss whether we had the energy to go to the crack. Considering that everything else which sounded so cool ended up being so lame, we were hesitant. Plus this was going to require trail riding. Of course this is why we purchased mountain bikes, but hey, let's not split hairs. I wanted to see the crack. I was picturing the San Andreas fault and I decided that I wasn't missing it.
It's a ditch. If it had a little water at the bottom of it, I would call it a creek. 0 for 3.
Did I mention the second fort? There's a reason I left it out.
The only thing we saw that I actually thought was really nifty was the Arch Rock. Beautiful, gorgeous, wish you were here. Jro asked is we went to it and yes, we rode our bikes up that hill too. I wanted to stay up there but it was our last day and we had to go back to town and catch our ferry. But it was so pretty. I'm sad to hear that it will be gone after Mother Nature and Father Time get done marching across it.
I'm poking a little fun at the island, but the truth it, Mackinac Island (and most of N. MI) is beautiful and we had a very relaxing time with each other. The worst thing that happened was I kept forgetting to bring the camera with us on our bike tours and missed out on some beautiful pics. Below is some of the few I got when I actually did remember to bring the camera.
We asked for and received a room upgrade to a lakeview. We were on the third floor and this was our view.

Gorgeous water on our leisurely bike ride on the bike path around the island. We stopped a couple times just to sit by the water. It was chilly, but still gorgeous.
Did I mention it was chilly? I was wishing I would have brought a warmer (and more fashionable hat). But when you are freezing, it is very easy to not care if you look lame. Or like a fly, in my case.

Vacations
I have spent the week trying to catch up from being gone. It was a long long week as you might have guessed with my lack of posting. I just got the pictures on the computer this afternoon.

Sam comandeered Dave's sunglasses while we were gone and just about refused to take them off. He thinks he is really cool right now. The cusp of teenagerness. I don't envy him the next few years.

Cinderella Castle. And us.
I take a photo like this everywhere we go. It's fun to look back and see how much taller the kids are getting. Maybe someday I'll put them all together.

We ate in Canada at Epcot this year and this was Sam's dessert. It was Chocolate "Moose" :)
I love traveling. For me, it is truly the spice I need in my life. If I don't have a trip to look forward to, I feel sad and lost. So, I'm always planning one.
But man oh man, catching up after the trip is a lot harder post kids. When I was single I used to flit all over the place whenever I felt like it. I guess I still pretty much do that, but there is a lot more laundry at the the end!
My next trip is hopefully going to be Vegas in June. This will be a little business and hopefully a little pleasure. I try to combine those anytime I can because then I can fly on the company which is a huge help.
But I digress. We had another wonderful time in Disney World. The weather was gorgeous. The parks weren't too crowded and we got to see most everything we loved at least twice. Some of them, like "The Haunted Mansion" and "Star Wars", we saw multiple times. Those two rides are Becca's and Sam's favorites, respectively. I also got to see my favorite, "The Carousel of Progress" twice. We got to spend an afternoon at the pool, I with a Pina Colada and Dave with a Mai Tai. It was nice, but I will tell you this, our next real vacation is going to be kidless.
Okay, so a few photos:
I told the kids about "Hidden Mickeys" and we spent the whole week trying to spot them. Dave found this one. It looks obvious, but I bet most people don't notice it. Dave and I, because of our trade, often notice electrical/fire alarm things in buildings that most people would walk right by.
Cinderella Castle. And us.

A Good Time Was Had By All
We're home. Phewww. What a whirlwind. We got home at 10pm last night. This morning I had to turn around and drive back to the airport to pick up my mom who was flying in from Tampa. I dropped her off at home and went on the grocery store to get goodies for the Super Bowl and for the week because I had no food, and I mean no food, in the house.
Then I had to take Dave to pick up his truck because he lent it to his friend while we were gone. Got home from that and sat down to pay bills. The computer freaked out so I quit and went to make the Super Bowl goodies. Mmmmm. Wings, Queso dip, Olive bread and fresh fruit. Yummm. Dave's in the computer room beating his head on the desk right now, but at least he had a nice meal. I'm using his laptop to type this post.
So, needless to say, I have not been able to get the pictures off my camera yet. And tomorrow we are all back to the grind, so I think it is going to take me all week to get caught up. I still have a couple loads of laundry to do.
But I will say this. We had a wonderful time. The weather was beautiful all but one day and even that wasn't so bad. We got to see everything we wanted to - most of our favorite rides we went on at least two or three times. The crowds weren't too bad. The kids enjoyed themselves and so did Dave and I.

Does Anyone Else Hate Packing?
I packed my daughter, and I have almost totally packed my husband. But I still have to pack myself and I've been putting it off all day. I love traveling, but I detest packing. I'm a famous over-packer mainly due to the fact that I following reasons:
#1 I love to have wardrobe choices. I mean how can I be expected to decide what I want to wear a week from Tuesday?
#2 Am I going to wear shorts everyday or pants every day. Or shorts a couple days and pants a couple days. I'm crazy this way and when I checked the weather forecast for Orlando, it was all over the place. And it looks like it will be a little cool at night.
And yes, I pack for my husband. And don't worry, I gave him lots of wardrobe choices.

Home Sweet Home
We're back! And I have a lot to do.
We had an amazing time on our little vacation this year, but we were very ready to get home and sleep in our own bed. I had some problem sleeping the last two nights we were away.
We also took nearly 500 pictures. I went a little overboard snapping photos of baby Max (he's so dang cute!!) and Dave went a little overboard snapping photos of the Gettysburg Battlefield. I intend to get those loaded on the computer before the end of the weekend and posted somewhere so you can look at them. I probably won't post the whole thing because I don't think most of you want to look at a hundred pictures of monuments from the battlefield. I guess that is the joy of digital cameras. You can take as many pics as you want, but don't have to print them all.
I am so glad I took today off as well. We left Gettysburg yesterday around 10:00am and arrived back home at 8:00pm last night. Getting up and having to deal with work would have bit.
The B&B was AWESOME! I will get some pictures of that up as well. The website does not lie.
Anyway, I need to get some coffee in me and get Becca up for school. I will be back with some nice vacation stories soon!!
